Biographical Information[edit]

Dean Sturgis attracted major league attention when he was at Bucknell University, a place where Christy Mathewson had gone. Pitcher Weldon Wyckoff had been with Dean at Bucknell, and was already with the 1913 Athletics when Dean played his last season at Bucknell. Sturgis joined the Athletics in 1914, a year in which they won the 1914 American League pennant. Sturgis appeared in four games, of which one was in the field, but he didn't catch Wyckoff. Instead, he caught the young Herb Pennock. As for his hitting, in five plate appearances he got a single and a walk, for an OBP of .400. He was 21 years old, and apparently did not play in the minors ever.

"Manager Mack announced last night that he had released catcher McAvoy to the Baltimore team, of the International League, being satisfied that the Athletics were sufficiently strong behind the bat with Schang, Lapp and Thomas, with Sturgis held in reserve in case of necessity." - Sporting Life, May 2, 1914

" The injury sustained by catcher Lapp on Thursday left the local team with only Sturgis, a youngster, to assist Schang in the receiving end." - Sporting Life, August 29, 1914, showing that Sturgis, who hadn't appeared since June, was still on the team
