David Berner began his pro career in 2009.

Berner was All-league two years in high school. Going on to junior college, he was 8-4 with a 2.59 ERA as a freshman in 2006 then 11-2 with two saves and a 1.98 ERA with only 11 walks in 109 innings as a sophomore. Transferring to San Jose State, he went 3-8 with a 5.96 ERA in 2008. As a senior, David was 7-2 with a 3.20 ERA. He led the Western Athletic Conference in both ERA and strikeouts (84) while finishing two wins shy of the lead. He was named All-Conference. The Houston Astros took him in the 14th round of the 2009 amateur draft.

Berner allowed ten runs and an uncharacteristic five walks in six innings for the 2009 Tri-City Valley Cats, going 0-1 in his first year as a pro. In 2010, he was 5-5 with 12 saves and a 3.28 ERA after 46 outings with the Lancaster Jethawks. On August 25, he was involved in a wild, five-man no-hitter by Lancaster. Relieving Edwin Walker with a 1-0 lead, he allowed the tying run in the 8th to the Lake Elsinore Storm on a walk and two errors of his own on bunts. David Carpenter replaced him and Lancaster wound up winning in 10 innings.
