Biographical Information[edit]

South Carolina native Dave Smith spent four active seasons in professional baseball from 1938 to 1941.

Dave was signed out of Duke University by the Philadelphia Athletics during the 1938 season. He made his major league debut with the Athletics on June 16, 1938, and spent the rest of the season with the Shibe Park team. He recorded a 2-1 record and a 5.08 ERA while appearing in 21 games. He was back with the big league Athletics for the opener in 1939. He appeared in one game on April 3rd with no decision and spent the rest of his pro career in the minor leagues.

Smith spent the balance of the 1939 season with three different teams, all Class B or better, winding up with a 7-10 record in 30 games. Dave had his best season in 1940 when he won 16 and lost 12 while appearing in 44 games for the Richmond Colts of the Class B Piedmont League. He built a 40-37 record while appearing in 112 games during his three-year time in the minor leagues.

David Merwin Smith left professional baseball after the 1941 season at the age of 26.
