Biographical Information[edit]
"Clements, Sam Trott and Dave Oldfield are the only left hand throwers who have been pronouncedly successful as catchers." - Sporting Life, May 28, 1898
Dave Oldfield played three seasons in the majors. Oddly, his years were 1883 and 1885-86, missing the year 1884 when there were three leagues in existence.
Oldfield played mostly catcher (he was left-handed), and also appeared in right field, center field and at shortstop.
He was born and died in Philadelphia, PA, but did not play for a major league team in Philly. Instead, he played for nearby teams in Washington, D.C. and Baltimore (as well as in Brooklyn).
He spent 1884 playing for Lancaster.
Much of his minor league career was in the International Association.
