Biographical Information

Dirty Dave Murphy didn't have much chance to get dirty for the Boston Beaneaters in 1905. He played only 3 games, from August 28th to August 30th, going 2-for-11 while playing shortstop in two games and third base in one. He made 2 errors in his one game at third base. The Beaneaters lost 103 games that year.

Regular shortstop Ed Abbaticchio was hitting well in 1905, but he did not return to any major league team in 1906, so perhaps manager Fred Tenney knew already in August that he needed to find a new shortstop for 1906. The job eventually went to Al Bridwell (involved later in the famous Merkle Bonehead Play), who kept the job in 1906 and 1907.

He and "Dirty Jack Doyle" are apparently the only two "Dirty" men in major league history.
