Biographical Information[edit]

Darin Cloninger pitched as high as AA.

Cloninger was taken by the San Diego Padres in the 11th round of the 1983 amateur draft. He was 0-3 with a 3.54 ERA for the Spokane Indians that summer, but averaged over a strikeout per inning. In 1984, Darin pitched three games for the Miami Marlins, then was sent with Dennis Rasmussen to the New York Yankees for Graig Nettles. Cloninger was 4-9 with a 2.85 ERA between Miami and the Fort Lauderdale Yankees for the season. He was 4th in the Florida State League in ERA. He split his last year, 1985, between Fort Lauderdale (4-4, 3.70) and the Albany-Colonie Yankees (1-3, 5.35). Overall, his record was 9-19, 3.50 in three seasons in pro baseball.

Cloninger returned to college and earned his master's degree. He then became a teacher, working at West Harnett High School and Northwoods Elementary School. He was assistant principal at Trexler Middle School and Jacksonville High School. He was principal of Swansboro Middle School for three years, then became principal of Richlands High School.
