Biographical Information[edit]
First baseman Dan Held played in the minor and independent leagues from 1993 to 2001. He was taken by the Philadelphia Phillies in the 42nd round of the 1993 amateur draft.
He hit just .205 his first campaign, but improved to .254/.331/.436 with 18 home runs and 69 RBI in 130 games for the Spartanburg Phillies in 1994. He spent most of 1995 with the Clearwater Phillies, but also played a couple games with the Reading Phillies, hitting .274/.369/.485 with 22 home runs and 85 RBI between them. He led the Florida State League with 21 home runs. He hit .244/.347/.455 with 26 home runs and 92 RBI in 136 games for Reading in 1996 and also reached Triple-A for the first time that year, going hitless in 14 at-bats for the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Red Barons. Back with Reading in 1997, Held hit .272/.345/.495 with 26 home runs and 86 RBI in 138 games. In his first full year at Triple-A in 1998, he hit .266/.336/.465 with 15 home runs and 57 RBI in 119 games. He spent most of 1999 with the independent Lehigh Valley Black Diamonds, hitting .277/.368/.571 with 25 home runs and 62 RBI in 87 games, but also spent 5 games with the Uni-President Lions, collecting one hit in 10 at-bats. In that year's Intercontinental Cup, he hit .286/324/.512 with 2 home runs and 8 RBI, making the All-Star team -- the only member of the United States squad to do so. He moved to the New York Mets system for 2000, spending most of the year at Double-A, but also a few games at Triple-A; he hit .312/.382/.464 with 11 home runs and 69 RBI in 117 games combined. He wrapped up his career with the independent Camden Riversharks in 2001, hitting .271/.351/.402 with 10 home runs and 52 RBI in 118 games.
Overall, Held hit .266/.349/.461 with 156 home runs and 588 RBI in 1,035 games over 9 seasons at all levels. He was a Florida State League All-Star in 1995 and an Atlantic League All-Star in 1999.
He became an assistant coach at Indiana University in 2019.
