Biographical Information[edit]
Pitcher Daniel Camarena was taken in the 20th round of the 2011 amateur draft by the New York Yankees and began his pro career in 2012. He had a 1.02 ERA in 17 2/3 innings his first professional season. In 2014, he was a Florida State League Mid-Season All-Star after going 5-5 with a 2.35 ERA in 16 starts for the Tampa Yankees. He missed 2015 to elbow surgery, but returned in 2016 to win 10 games for the first time. He also reached Triple A for the first time that year (0-1, 6 IP, 6.00 ERA).
He was released by the Yankees at the end of the 2019 season and signed with his hometown team, the San Diego Padres the following February. He spent the 2020 season at the Padres' alternate training site, then was assigned to the AAA El Paso Chihuahuas to start the season. He was called up to San Diego on June 19th and made his debut that day, pitching 2 2/3 innings in relief against the Cincinnati Reds and giving up 3 runs. On July 8th, he became the first relief pitcher since Don Robinson in 1985 to hit a grand slam. It came against none other than Max Scherzer of the Washington Nationals and was a key moment in the Padres clawing out of an 8-0 deficit to win a wild game, 9-8, the biggest comeback in franchise history. It was Camarena's first major league hit, as he joined Bill Duggleby as the only two pitchers whose first big league hit was a slam (Duggleby had hit his in his first career at-bat, back in 1898).
