Biographical Information[edit]

Right-hander Dale Matthewson spent sixteen seasons in professional baseball from 1942 to 1957. Dale originally signed as an amateur free agent with the Philadelphia Blue Jays and would get two chances to make the big leagues, pitching in eleven games in 1943 with an 0-3 record and 1944, appearing in 17 games with no decisions. This was Dale's sum total for his time in the major leagues.

Meanwhile, in the minor leagues, Dale was 19 years old when he took the mound for his first professional year with the 1942 Rome Colonels of the class C Canadian-American League and he managed a 9-11 record and a 4.75 ERA his first trip out. Looking forward in his lengthy career to 1957, Dale, now 34 years old, chalked up a 5-9 year and a 3.46 ERA in his last trip to the mound in professional baseball with the Tulsa Oilers of the AA Texas League.

During his sixteen-year trip through the minors, Dale spent time with thirteen different teams in ten different leagues. He managed seven double-digit winning seasons with his best seasonal winning numbers coming in 1951 when he went 18-5 with a 2.08 ERA for the class B Tampa Smokers of the Florida International League. Matthewson backed it up with a 21-11 and a 2.32 ERA record for the same club in the 1952 season. Dale finished up his 16-year minor league career with a 134-99 record in 449 appearances for a .575 winning percentage.

After baseball, Dale made his home in Blairsville, GA, where he lived and worked until his death on February 20, 1984 in the Union General Hospital in Blairsville at sixty years of age.
