Biographical Information[edit]

"Pitcher 'Cy' Bowen, who made such a splendid record with Hartford in the Atlantic League for 1897, is pretty certain of landing in the big circuit for next season, his elegant work having attracted two or three managers. Bowen is all ambition to get into the major organization . . ." - Sporting Life, Nov. 6, 1897, about Cy Bowen, who did not appear in the majors after his 1896 cameo

Sutherland McCoy "Cy" Bowen played two games in the majors along with a long minor league career. He was the first major leaguer with the last name Bowen. Bowen was born in Indiana in 1871, the same year Amos Rusie was born there. Sporting Life in 1897 carried a story that Bowen promised he would never return to his hometown of Anderson until he made it in the big leagues. As of 1897, he had supposedly gone three years without going back. Bowen died in Greensburg, IN, only nine miles from his birthplace of Kingston, IN, and around 60 miles away from Anderson.
