Biographical Information[edit]

After playing baseball and basketball at the University of Oregon (with Earl Averill), Curt Barclay, a 6'3" right-hander, turned down an offer from the Boston Celtics to sign with the New York Giants. After fulfilling his military service at the time of the Korean War, Barclay led the 1954 Carolina League in wins with 19, and came up with the Giants in 1957 in their final season in New York after winning 15 games with the AAA Minneapolis Millers in 1956. He had a record of 9-9 in 1957, including a pair of shutouts as a rookie, but spent most of the next two years with the Phoenix Giants of the PCL with the exception of a few appearances with the big club, now in San Francisco. A shoulder injury to his pitching arm ended his big league career with a record of 10-9 and a 3.48 ERA. Curt's seven year minor league stats were respectable, with a 65-65 record in 184 games and 1,126 innings, giving up 1,266 base hits, with 315 bases on balls for a 4.04 ERA. He died March 25, 1985, at age 53 in Missoula, MT, where he had been employed as a plywood division superintendent for a lumber company.
