Biographical Information

Crispin Poveda pitched in Panama from 1979-1994, never turning professional; he led Panama's amateur league in strikeouts three times (twice striking out eight in a row) and once beat the Cuban national team.

Poveda led Panama with 29 whiffs in 1980 and 43 in 1981. In the 1982 Central American and Caribbean Games, he dazzled to beat the vaunted Cuban squad, 2-1, one of the most famous Panamanian national team efforts of the 20th Century. Panama wound up with a Bronze Medal. He also played for Panama in the 1982 Amateur World Series. He carried the burden for Panama in the 1984 Amateur World Series, working 30 of their 105 2/3 IP and going 2-2 with a 2.10 ERA. He had a third of Panama's decision. He tied for 9th in the event in wins. In 1987, his 39 strikeouts led the Panamanian league. Overall, Crispin was 66-31 with 634 strikeouts in his amateur career. Through 2013, he was among Panama's career leaders in wins (6th, between Elpidio Pinto and Abraham Atencio), losses (tied for 9th) and strikeouts (6th, between Pinto and Gilberto Mendez). He later coached for Panama in the 1998 Baseball World Cup, 2005 Baseball World Cup (when they got a Bronze, their third and final Baseball World Cup medal) and 2017 Bolivarian Games (a Silver Medal).
