The Corpus Christi Seagulls played in Corpus Christi, TX in 1976-1977. In '76, they were members of the Gulf States League. They won the western division in both halves (27-10 and 23-17) then beat the Seguin Toros 3 games to 0 for the championship. Managed by Leo Mazzone, the Seagulls led the league in offense (556 runs, 105 more than anyone else). They also led the GSL in attendance - their 74,280 fans drawn were just less than the next three teams combined. Player-manager Mazzone went 7-2 with one save and a 3.73 ERA. Stars incluided the talented outfield trio of Mike Krizmanich, Jim Rainey and James Capehart. Krizmanich (.386/~.465/.557) led the league in average, triples (8) and doubles (23). Rainey (.359/~.454/.496) was second in average. Capehart (.336/~.420/.611) led in slugging, homers (16), RBI (87) and total bases (173).
In 1977 the league changed into the Lone Star League, though only a few teams remained from a year earlier. Corpus Christi again was a powerhouse. Mazzone's team went 30-10 in the first half and 23-17 in the second half to put together the best record, 53-27, 12 games ahead of any other club. They won the southern division in both halves of the season and led in offense (553 runs) and pitching/defense (402 runs allowed). They led in attendance as well (92,137) and no team took the season series with them. Armando Reyes (9-3, 4 Sv, 2.59) led the LSL in ERA and strikeouts (101 in 111 IP) while Ken Palmer (11-7, 2 Sv, 2.69) was second in ERA and led in complete games (14) and shutouts (3). Rainey hit .318/~.394/.507 and stole 25 bases in 26 tries, while SS Lloyd Thompson (.355/~.448/.482) was second in the league in average and tied for the hit lead (109) and C Marc Sinovich (.265/~.374/.504) popped the most home runs (16). After the season ended, the Seagulls refused to play in a post-season playoff and no league champion was crowned as a result. The league and team did not return the next season.
