Biographical Information[edit]

Pitcher Con Dempsey played baseball and basketball at the University of San Francisco and served in the Navy during World War II.

Playing for the San Francisco Seals, he led the Pacific Coast League in strikeouts in 1948 and 1949. He threw sidearm at the time. He had a cup of coffee in the majors with the Pittsburgh Pirates in 1951, where Branch Rickey, who did not like quirky deliveries, forced him to throw overhand, a motion with which he had much less success. He also attended spring training with the Philadelphia Phillies in 1952, but did not make the team. After his baseball career ended, he was a junior high teacher and coach at Giannini Middle School in San Francisco for many years.
