Team History

After a two-year absence, Columbus, GA returned to the Southern League in 1969 as a farm team of the Chicago White Sox. The Columbus White Sox were managed by Gary Johnson and finished fourth in the six-team SL with a 65-75 record. They drew 23,714 fans, fewest in the league, and less than half of the size of the crowd that showed up for the league's All-Star game in Birmingham, AL. The team had one member of the postseason All-Star team, C Doug Adams, who hit .245/~.334/.387 and led the SL's catchers in assists. Future minor league managing standout Joe Sparks was the main second baseman and finished third in the league in average at .306/~.376/.407 while 1B Tony Solaita (.262/~.382/.571) led the club with 15 homers, despite playing only 59 games. Lester Clinkscales (8-3, 2 Sv, 1.48), Darrell Peters (5-2, 3 Sv, 1.86) and Paul Edmondson (7-3, 1.87) all did fine work while being used as both starters and relievers, but none of them qualified for the ERA title. The city found a new sponsor in 1970 and became the Columbus Astros.
