Biographical Information[edit]

Pitcher Colin Kaepernick is better known as an NFL quarterback. He was selected by the Chicago Cubs in the 43rd round of the 2009 amateur draft but opted to stay in college at the University of Nevada instead. He was then chosen by the San Francisco 49ers in the 2011 NFL draft and became the team's starting QB the following year.

He drew attention in the 2016-2017 season for refusing to stand for the National Anthem in a protest against racial discrimination in policing, a move that made him the subject of much national controversy. However, the movement he started amplified, with a number of other players joining in, both in the NFL and NBA. He became a free agent and was unsigned before the 2017 season, a move which many observers interpreted as backlash for his political stance. In baseball, Bruce Maxwell was the first player to join the movement he started, in September of 2017.

After being forced to sit out the 2018 season as a result of being blacklisted, he did something almost unprecedented: he won a lawsuit against the all-powerful NFL: on February 15, 2019, the NFL reached a settlement with Kaepernick, and while the terms were not revealed, it was clear that the league had caved in order to avoid a humiliating loss in a court of law.
