Biographical Information[edit]

Claude Corbitt was originally signed by the New York Yankees while at Duke. It was Claude who was supposed to be the Yankees' shortstop of the future, but he had arm troubles and Phil Rizzuto leapfrogged him, starring at Yankee Stadium for a number of years. Corbitt eventually came to the majors, but not until he was 29 years old. His career was of the bit player variety, serving as something of an infield rover with the Cincinnati Reds (1946; 1948 to 1949) after a two game, .500 (2-for-5) cameo with the Brooklyn Dodgers in 1945). In 215 games, Claude batted .243 with 60 runs scored. During World War II, he was in the U.S. Army Air Corps.
