Cincinnati Redlegs

Prior to the start of the 1953 season, the Cincinnati Reds changed their name to the Redlegs. This was due to avoid any and all suspicions of having Communist sympathies. Officially the team played under the Redlegs name until 1959. Though the team is referred to as the Redlegs, at least publicly, various documents, such as stationary, and a team year book, refers to the team as either the Cincinnati Baseball Club Co. or the Cincinnati Red Stockings. It isn’t until about 1957, that the official documentation has the team listed as the Redlegs. During this time, the team produced only two winning seasons, in 1956 and 1957. It ws the first time since 1943/1944 that the team had a winning season, as well as back-to-back winning seasons.
