Biographical Information

Chul-min Kang was a top collegiate pitcher in South Korea who battled injuries after turning pro.

Kang pitched for the South Korean national team in the 1998 Asian Games, helping them win a Gold Medal. He was the ace of the Korean team that won Silver at the 1998 Baseball World Cup, going 1-0 with a save and a 2.70 ERA and fanning 20 in 20 innings. In the Gold Medal game, he relieved Byung-hyun Kim in the 6th and allowed 3 runs in 3 2/3 IP to the Cuban national team during a 7-1 loss.

Kang walked 6 of 16 batters he faced in the 1999 Intercontinental Cup and was charged with 4 runs in 2 1/3 IP, going 0-1 as Korea's worst hurler. Kang won MVP awards in college in both 2000 and 2001.

In 2002, Kang became a pro with the KIA Tigers, but went 5-6 with a 5.68 ERA, allowing 100 hits in 77 2/3 IP. During 2003, he was 6-7 with a 4.88 ERA, serving up 16 homers in 90 1/3 innings and walking (53) more than he struck out (44). In 2004, Chul-min went 8-12 with a save and a 5.33 ERA. He had a 3-8, 4.68 record in 2005, walking 63 in 92 1/3 IP. For the 2006 Tigers, the right-hander was 3-2 with a 2.76 ERA with 37 walks in 58 2/3 IP. Through 2006, he had a 25-35, 4.85 record in 117 games in the Korea Baseball Organization.

Kang did not pitch in 2007-2008. In April 2009, he was traded to the LG Twins in exchange for Sang-hyeon Kim and Ki-nam Park.
