Biographical Information[edit]
Pitcher Chris Smith was called up by the Toronto Blue Jays on September 27, 2016, after Joaquin Benoit had injured his leg in a freak accident, but he was not used in a game during the final week of the season. He did make his big league debut the following year, on June 27, 2017, pitching a scoreless inning of relief against the Baltimore Orioles.
Smith began his professional career in the independent leagues, pitching for the Lake Erie Crushers of the Frontier League in 2010. After playing three seasons in the indy leagues and sitting out the 2013 season, he was signed by the New York Yankees before the 2014 season. He then joined the Blue Jays organization midway through the 2015 season. In 2016, he had split his time between the AA New Hampshire Fisher Cats and the AAA Buffalo Bisons, going a combined 1-3, 1.93 in 47 games, with 15 saves, all of them recorded in the Eastern League.
He was one of two Chris Smiths to last play in the majors in 2017. The other Chris Smith debuted in 2008 pitched for the Oakland Athletics in 2017.
