Biographical Information[edit]
Chris Segal has been an umpire in the Appalachian League (2007), South Atlantic League (2008), Southern League (2009-2010) and Pacific Coast League (2011-2012). He worked MLB spring training in 2012 and the 2013 World Baseball Classic Qualifiers.
Segal worked his first major league games in 2014 and continued to work a regular schedule of games over the following years while still officially on the International League staff. On August 9, 2019, he got into a violent argument with Brett Gardner of the New York Yankees, when he ejected him from the game after hearing a comment directed at him from the dugout. Gardner, who claimed afterwards that he hadn't said a word, was extremely angry over the apparent injustice and manager Aaron Boone had to use all his strength to prevent him from attacking Segal. In spite of this incident, Segal was added to the permanent major league umpiring staff in 2020. He worked the 2023 World Baseball Classic.
