Biographical Information[edit]

Chris Resop was drafted by the Florida Marlins in the 4th round of the 2001 amateur draft as an outfielder. He was signed by scout Mike Tosar and made his pro debut that summer. Resop posted batting averages of .124, .264, and .191 from 2001 to 2003. By 2004, Resop was a full-time pitcher.

Resop made his major league debut with the Florida Marlins in 2005 and also pitched with the team in 2006. He pitched exclusively in relief in the major leagues those two seasons, posting a decent 3.38 ERA the second year that masked an alarming K/W ration of 10/16 and 26 hits allowed in 21 ⅓ innings. He was traded to the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim after that season in return for Kevin Gregg, who would win the Marlins' closer job in 2007. For his part, Resop only pitched in four games for his new team in 2007.

Chris Resop made the Atlanta Braves' bullpen out of spring training in 2008 and was leading the National League in appearances early in the season. On April 3, he was used as a left fielder for a third of an inning in an extra-inning game against the Pittsburgh Pirates. With one out in the 10th inning and two runners on base, manager Bobby Cox called on lefty Royce Ring to face left-handed batter Adam LaRoche; however, the Braves had been forced to use their entire bullpen already because presumptive starter Mike Hampton had injured himself during pre-game warm-ups. Cox thus asked Resop to take over in left field while Ring struck out LaRoche; Resop then returned to the mound, but gave up the game-winning hit to the next batter and was charged with the loss. It was the first time the strategy of moving a pitcher to the field to gain a platoon advantage had been used in Major League Baseball since July 15, 1993, when Jeff Nelson played a third of an inning in left field for the Seattle Mariners against Boston. He was sent down to the Richmond Braves shortly thereafter, then was released on July 24th in order to sign with the Hanshin Tigers.

After missing all of 2009, Resop returned to the Braves organization in 2010, making it back to the major leagues.
