Biographical Information[edit]
Chris Prieto is the twin brother of Rick Prieto. Both were selected in the 1993 amateur draft. Chris made it to the majors, albeit briefly; Rick did not. Chris was drafted by the San Diego Padres in the 24th round of the 1993 Amateur Draft from the University of Nevada, Reno. Prieto advanced through the Padres minor league system at a reasonable pace and reached AAA for the first time in 1996. Unfortunately for Prieto, he got stuck at that level from 1998-2004 with five different teams. He spent most of 2005 at AAA also, only appearing in two major league games with the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim.
In 2011, Prieto became a hitting coach with the Eugene Emeralds, a position he retained in 2012. He became a manager with the Pulaski Mariners in 2013. Prieto was slated to manage the Clinton LumberKings in 2014, but was elevated to the parent Seattle Mariners coaching staff as a "quality control coach" on March 31st. He kept that position in 2015 and 2016. With the 2017 Mariners he served as a "Special Projects Coach". Prieto returned to the field when he was named first base coach for the 2018 squad. In 2019, he was third base and outfield coach, but was let go at the end of the season.
The Tampa Bay Rays hired Prieto in 2022 to work as the organization's minor league outfield/baserunning coordinator, a role he repeated in 2021. He returned to the major leagues in 2022 as the Rays' first base coach. The Rays released Prieto after the 2023 season. The Washington Nationals then hired Prieto in 2024 to serve as their minor league outfield & baserunning coordinator.
He coached for the New Zealand national team in the 2017 World Baseball Classic Qualifiers.
