Biographical Information[edit]

Charlie Snell was in the major leagues at age 18, and given his age, didn't do too badly. He hit .211/.348/.263 for the St. Louis Browns in 1912. He was less than half the age of shortstop and teammate Bobby Wallace, who was 38. Charlie was a catcher.

He also played three years in the minors, 1913-1915.

Sporting Life of March 12, 1912 announced that the Harrisburg Senators had signed Snell from Reading High School. The July 20 issue said he had also played independent ball with Clearfield. The August 10 issue stated:

"The Browns have four catchers on the payroll, but right now just one of them is able to work. He is Snell, the youngster secured from the Tri-State League."

Charlie lived to be 94 years ago, and died in Reading, PA, the town where he had gone to high school.

He is apparently not related to Wally Snell, who was older than Charlie but broke into the majors a year later. Wally was catching at Brown University in 1912 when Charlie was at Reading High School and then in the majors.
