Biographical Information[edit]
Charlie Hastings was born in Ironton, OH and made his major league debut with the 1893 Cleveland Spiders, appearing in 15 games. He was four years younger than team star Cy Young, who was also from Ohio. Charlie was then in the minors for two seasons, most notably going 28-14 for the 1894 Kansas City Blues, and then came back to the majors for three seasons with the Pittsburgh Pirates in 1896-98. His pitching gradually improved during that time, but he was back in the minors during 1899-1904.
Through 2020, the only other major leaguer named Hastings has been Scott Hastings, who played 20 years before Charlie did.
