Biographical Information[edit]

Charlie Harris came out of Mercer University in Georgia to play major league baseball at age 21 with the Baltimore Orioles in 1899, alongside such well-known players such as player-manager John McGraw, catcher Wilbert Robinson, and outfielder Steve Brodie. Charlie played mostly third base, which was interesting inasmuch as it was manager McGraw's position. Although Charlie's .279 batting average looks OK, he had little power and the team batting average was .297.

After baseball, Charlie ran a grocery store in Gainesville, FL and stayed in contact with McGraw, who brought his team down to Gainesville for spring training in 1919. [1] The same source shows that Charlie's nickname was "Chick".
