Biographical Information[edit]

"No, he's a right fielder." - Dave Hamilton, Oakland A's pitcher, when asked if teammate Charlie was of Chinese descent

Charlie Chant was an outfielder who appeared in 20 games in the mid-1970s, with the Oakland A's in 1975 and the St. Louis Cardinals in 1976. He was traded from Oakland to St. Louis for pinch runner (and sometimes infielder) Larry Lintz to satisfy another Charlie, in this case Finley's, weird obsession with designated runners, following the fall from grace of Herb Washington. Not only is his name remarkably like the mystery character "Charlie Chan", but his name is also one of the few major league names where both the first and last name start with "Ch".
