Biographical Information[edit]
Infielder Charlie Carroll played in the minor leagues from 1909 to 1916, 1920 to 1926 and 1928 to 1929. Perhaps his best campaign was 1923, when he hit .303 with 5 home runs, 31 doubles and 138 hits in 120 games for the Greensboro Patriots. He hit about .258 for his career. In his first season, at 18 years old, he also served as a pitcher, going 17-17 with a 2.40 run average (earned run average unknown) in 308 innings.
He served as manager of the Patriots from 1920 to 1924, 1928 to 1929 and for the first part of 1947. He led the club to just one first place finish, but three Piedmont League championship victories (1920, 1921 and 1929), as well as another trip to the league finals, which the team lost (1923). He managed the Winston-Salem Twins in 1925 and to begin 1930, but was replaced by John Brock partway through the year. He also managed the Raleigh Capitals for part of 1926, as well as in 1945 and to begin 1946. The club lost the league final in 1945 and, though he wasn't skipper when they won, won the league championship in 1946. He led the Monroe Drillers to begin 1926, but was replaced by Eddie Palmer. He was head coach at Elon University in 1927.
His birthplace has also been listed as Durham, NC.[1]
