Biographical Information[edit]

Charlie Kerfeld was signed as a 1st round pick (secondary phase) in the 1982 amateur draft by the Houston Astros and scout Bob Kennedy Jr..

Kerfeld wore #37. In 1987, his contract was worth $110,037.37 in honor of his number.

On March 1, 1987, Kerfeld - then a relief pitcher for the Houston Astros - announced that he was going to buy 3,000 tickets per game to give away to various charities. Without a discount, however, the total of these tickets would have been $1.6 million. Unable to afford that while making $110,037.37 that year, he had to back down from his claim.

Kerfeld was known as one of the most colorful players of the later 1980s, but after a fine 1986 season that helped the Astros win the NL West title, his career declined, largely due to injuries. He later became a manager in independent and minor league baseball. As of 2016, Kerfeld has been a "Special Assistant to the General Manager" for the Philadelphia Phillies since at least 2008.
