Biographical Information[edit]

Brother of Joe Yingling, Charles Yingling got into a major league game in an interesting way:

"Grady in the fourth inning retired with a badly spiked leg, Cross going behind the bat. Irwin assumed the position at short while he sent scouts out for a player. In the fifth . . . (an) amateur, Mr. Yingling, went to short." - Sporting Life, June 30, 1894, about the game on June 22

Charles was not completely an amateur - he had at least played a few games in the New England League in 1887. As for manager Arthur Irwin, it was the only time he appeared in a game all season.
