Charles H. Knapp

Biographical Information[edit]

Charles Knapp was one of the most influential figures in the minor leagues in his day, serving concurrently as President of the Baltimore Orioles and of the International League until his death on July 27, 1936. At his funeral, held on July 30th, Warren Giles was appointed as league president, while Mary Dunn, the widow of Jack Dunn, the Orioles' late owner, took over the functions of team president. Knapp had got his start as Dunn's personal attorney and was named a director of the Orioles when Dunn purchased the team, with financial help from Connie Mack, in 1909. When Dunn died in 1928, Mary Dunn had asked Knapp to assume the presidency of the Orioles until a deal could be arranged for the sale of the club, but that deal never materialized.
