Biographical Information[edit]

Pitcher Cesar Vargas began his professional career in 2009 after being signed by the New York Yankees. His professional career has had numerous seasons of note.

After posting a 2.06 ERA in 39 1/3 innings for the DSL Yankees 2 in 2010, he was 5-4 with a 2.39 ERA in 15 starts for the DSL Yankees 1 the next year; in 71 2/3 innings, he had 85 strikeouts. He had 14 saves, 30 games finished and 76 strikeouts in 69 2/3 innings for the Charleston River Dogs and Tampa Yankees in 2014 (he was a MiLB.com Organization All-Star that year) and in 2015, he was 6-0 while averaging more than a strikeout per inning between the Trenton Thunder and Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders. He reached Double A and Triple A for the first time that year. In November 2015, the Yankees granted him free agency. The San Diego Padres signed him and after starting 2016 with a 1.42 mark with 14 strikeouts and one walk in two starts for the San Antonio Missions, he was promoted to the majors.

On April 23, 2016 he made his debut, starting against the St. Louis Cardinals. In five innings, he allowed one run on five hits and three walks.
