Biographical information[edit]

Cary Ammons is a former minor league baseball starting pitcher who played from 1998 to 2001 in the Kansas City Royals and Cincinnati Reds farm systems.

Drafted in the 11th round of the 1998 amateur draft, Ammons began his professional career with the Spokane Indians that season. In 15 games (14 starts), he went 5-3 with a 1.70 ERA, striking out 83 batters in 74 1/3 innings. He led the Northwest League in ERA. He was an All-Star that year. He pitched for the Charleston AlleyCats in 1999, going 8-5 with a 2.98 ERA in 16 games started, striking out 92 batters in 90 2/3 innings of work. For the Wilmington Blue Rocks in 2000, Ammons went 3-4 with a 3.26 ERA in 17 games (nine starts). He had 85 strikeouts in 80 innings.

Ammons began the 2001 season with the Blue Rocks, going 2-6 with a 3.88 ERA in 12 games started, striking out 64 batters in 58 innings. On June 20, he was traded to the Reds for Donnie Sadler. He finished the season with the Mudville Nine, going 1-4 with a 2.94 ERA in 14 games (nine starts) and striking out 81 batters in 64 1/3 innings of work for them. Overall, he went 3-10 with a 3.38 ERA that season, striking out 145 batters in 122 1/3 innings.

In his four year minor league career, Ammons went 19-22 with a 2.92 ERA in 74 games (60 starts). In 367 1/3 innings, he had 405 strikeouts and 148 walks.

Life After Baseball[edit]

He served as superintendent of Buffalo Valley School in Buffalo Valley, OK. He is now superintendent at Antlers Public Schools in Antlers, OK.
