Biographical Information[edit]
Carlos Zaldo was a Cuban shortstop and the captain of the Almendares club in the the Cuban League's first season in 1878. His club took the field against Esteban Bellan's Habana club, and just barely lost by a score of 21-20 in the first official game in Cuba; he led off the game as the first official batter in a Cuban contest. Zaldo had attended Fordham University which was actually where Bellan went too, a decade earlier. He was inducted into the Cuban Baseball Hall of Fame in 1951 and has a plaque dedicated to him in El Estadio Latinamericano. He had two brothers named Enrique and Fredrico.
