Biographical Information[edit]
Carl Barger was a corporate lawyer who helped lead a group to keep the Pittsburgh Pirates in Pittsburgh, PA after they were put up for sale by John Galbreath's family in 1985. He was president of the Pirates from 1987 to 1991, then moved to the Florida Marlins, newly created as the result of the expansion of 1993, in a similar capacity. He died of a ruptured aorta while attending the winter meetings in 1992, before the Marlins had played their first game. The Marlins retired number 5 in his honor, as his favorite player was Joe DiMaggio. When the Florida Marlins became the Miami Marlins in 2012, the team unretired it. It was first issued to Logan Morrison.
