Canal Zone League

From BR Bullpen

A 1941 Associated Press feature said that the Canal Zone League of Panama dated back to 1906, although other sources place its beginning some years later. The finest period in this league's history was almost certainly World War II when numerous major leaguers from the United States were posted in the Canal Zone while serving in the armed forces. They included Terry Moore and Mickey Harris. Johnny Grodzicki revived his career in this league. Mike Ryba also played there.

The Canal Zone League decided not to operate in the 1951-52 season, and thereupon appears to have become defunct. The 1950-51 season featured just three teams -- Cristobal (which won the last six titles), Balboa, and Diablo Heights -- playing a limited 17-game schedule.
