Biographical Information[edit]
Pitcher Calvin Faucher was drafted in the 10th round of the 2017 amateur draft, by the Minnesota Twins out of the University of California, Irvine. On July 22, 2021, he was traded to the Tampa Bay Rays alongside veteran DH Nelson Cruz in return for Ps Joe Ryan and Drew Strotman.
In his major league debut for the Rays on May 9, 2022, he gave up the first grand slam of Shohei Ohtani's career. He had come in to pitch the 7th against the Los Angeles Angels with his team trailing, 6-3 and gave up two singles and a walk to load the bases, then walked Mike Trout to force a run home before Ohtani connected for his second homer of the game. He then stayed in the game and finally retired his first batter, Anthony Rendon, on a fly ball, as well as the next two batters, including his first career strikeout in Aaron Whitefield, to end what was a trying outing. The last pitcher to start his career with five or more runs allowed had been Lino Urdaneta, who had allowed all six batters he faced to score in his debut for the 2004 Detroit Tigers.
