James Calvin Ewing

Biographical Information

J. Cal Ewing served as president of the Pacific Coast League from 1907-1909. Ewing also owned the Oakland Oaks and San Francisco Seals. Ewing is credited along with Seals owner Henry Harris, with helping to create the league in 1903. Ewing was also instrumental in keeping the league alive following the San Francisco earthquake of 1906, using his own fortune to keep the league afloat at this time. After the league had to suspend operations in 1918 for World War I, it was once again Ewing who helped bring the league back to life. He continued to own the Oaks until 1929 when he sold the team due to his poor health. Ill fated Ewing Field was named after him as he paid to build the new stadium. Ewing is a member of the Pacific Coast League Hall of Fame
