Biographical Information

Byung-yong Chae is a pitcher for the SK Wyverns.

Chae debuted in the Korea Baseball Organization in 2002, going 7-9 with 11 saves and a 3.19 ERA in 51 games for the Wyverns. He fanned 126 in 141 innings while allowing 120 hits in a fine debut. He was a reliever for the South Korean squad in the 2002 Intercontinental Cup, striking out 11 and allowing 2 runs (1 earned) in 6 2/3 IP; he won one game. He got the final two outs in the top of the 9th of the Gold Medal game but Korea failed to rally and lost 2-1 to the Cuban national team.

The right-hander fell to 9-5, 4.82 with 4 saves in 2003. He did not pitch for SK in 2004 and followed with a 8-8, 4.24 campaign in 2005. In 2006, he was 7-8 with a 3.07 ERA. Chae went 11-8 with a 2.84 ERA during 2007 and was second in the Korea Baseball Organization in ERA, trailing only MVP Danny Rios. Chae was at the center of controversy in game two of the 2007 Korean Series when he hit Kyung-hyun An with a pitch, breaking his hand, then later plunked Dong-joo Kim, setting off a brawl. Chae was back on the mound for Game Six and won to give the Wyverns their first Korean Series title.

In 2008, Chae continued to pitch well for SK. His record was 10-2 and he had a 2.70 ERA, good for 4th in the KBO behind Suk-min Yoon, Kwang-hyun Kim and Jung Bong.

Chae fell to 3-3 with 2 saves and a 4.70 ERA in 2009. He came in to rescue the Wyverns in game six of the 2009 Korean Series. In game seven, though, he gave up the game-losing homer to Ji-wan Na in the bottom of the 9th. After the Series, Chae began his military service.
