Biographical Information[edit]
Byeong-Hak An, also known as Byeong-hak Ahn, pitched in the U.S. minor leagues from 2001 to 2004.
He was signed by the Boston Red Sox out of college in January 2001, at a time when the Red Sox were very aggressive in scouting the Far East Asian market, with signings of other untested young players like Tomo Ohka or Seung Song. He began his career with the Sarasota Red Sox of the Florida State League, going 2-8, 3.62 in 23 games, including 21 starts. He returned to Sarasota in 2002 and was 4-7, 5.33 after 25 games (12 starts) when he was traded to the Chicago White Sox on July 31st along with Frank Francisco in return for Bobby Howry. He finished that year in the Carolina League with the Winston-Salem Warthogs, going 2-0, 3.80 in 11 games. He had his best season in 2003, when he combined to go 13-7, 3.58 in 28 games (26 starts) between Winston-Salem and the AA Birmingham Barons. He tossed 148 1/3 innings and recorded 90 strikeouts against 61 walks.
He regressed badly in 2004 however, as he was back in Winston-Salem, and was even sent down one other level to the Kannapolis Intimidators of the South Atlantic League. Overall, he was 2-7, 5.60 in 33 games, with 11 starts, with just 38 strikeouts against 41 walks in 80 1/3 innings. This was clearly not going to get him to the Show and he returned to Korea after that season. He was under contract with the Lotte Giants of the Korea Baseball Organization in 2008 and 2009, but he was beset by injuries and seemingly did not appear in any games.
After baseball, he became a coach at Yeogang Middle School in Korea.
