Biographical Information[edit]

Outfielder Buddy Reed was a 2nd round pick by the San Diego Padres in the 2016 amateur draft, out of the University of Florida. It was his second time being drafted; in 2013, the Texas Rangers had picked him in the 35th round coming out of high school, but he had decided to go to college.

In his first pro season, in 2016, he was with the Tri-City Dust Devils in the Northwest League, where he hit .254/.326/.337 in 51 games. In 2017, he moved to the Midwest League and the Fort Wayne TinCaps, hitting .234/.290/.396 in 88 games. While his batting average and OBP remained disappointing, he did show his first flashes of power, with 17 doubles, 8 triples and 6 homers. He played in the Australian Baseball League the following winter and put up some great stats for the Canberra Cavalry, hitting .326 with 10 homers and 21 RBIs in 31 games. He continued to hit well with the Lake Elsinore Storm of the California League at the start of 2018, as he hit .324 with 12 homers and 47 RBIs in 79 games. That earned him an invitation to play for the United States team in the 2018 Futures Game, as well as a promotion to the AA San Antonio Missions of the Texas League in mid-season, He found the going rougher there, hitting .179 in 43 games, to finish with a combined line of .271/.319/.345 in 122 games. He then played in the Arizona Fall League and found his hitting stroke again, hitting .333 in 17 games.
