Biographical Information

Righthander Bud Thomas pitched eleven seasons in professional baseball from 1932 to 1942. He spent all or parts of seven seasons in the major leagues with three teams and did the same in the minors, with the exception that he appeared with eight different clubs in a similar seven year span.

Bud managed a 25-34 record in his seven year run in the big leagues with a 4.96 ERA while appearing in 143 games. Oddly enough, Thomas had his only winning season in 1939, a 7-1 record with a 5.22 ERA, and appeared with all three teams he had been affiliated with, the Washington Senators, Philadelphia Athletics and the Detroit Tigers.

Foster had a very successful minor league career, showing a 101-72 record and a 3.11 ERA, while pitching 1,480 innings. He had five double-digit winning years, with two of those being 20 game win seasons. It could be said that Bud's best season was in 1932, his first, when he went 20-7 with a 2.97 ERA for the Youngstown Buckeyes of the class B Central League. His other 20 win year came in 1935 for the Atlanta Crackers of the class A Southern Association, helping his team to the league title and playoff championship.

Luther Baxter Thomas left the game after the 1942 season and returned to his native home, where he worked and lived until his death on May 20, 2001 in North Garden, VA.

The Thomas family lives in North Garden and Charlottsville, Virgina and New York (state).
