Biographical Information

Outfielder Buck Jackson was drafted four times before signing with a major league team. He eventually played in the Houston Astros system in 1985 and 1986.

He was originally drafted out of high school by the San Francisco Giants in the 37th round of the 1982 amateur draft, one pick before future NBA star Dell Curry. He was next taken by the Giants in the fourth round of the 1983 January Secondary Phase draft, then by the Montreal Expos in the second round of the 1985 January Regular Phase draft. He finally signed after being taken in the first round (21st overall) by the Astros in the 1985 June Secondary Phase Draft.

He began his professional career with the GCL Astros, hitting .227/.296/.284 with a team-high 15 stolen bases in 19 tries in 54 games. The next year, with the Auburn Astros, he hit .190/.290/.273 with 15 stolen bases (caught once) in 48 games. Overall, he hit .213/.293/.279 in 102 minor league games, fielding .945 in the outfield. He was 30-for-35 in steals, his best area. He also pitched one game, allowing 3 walks, 2 hits and 3 runs in two innings while fanning three.
