Biographical Information

William "Buck" Hooker had a long professional baseball career, including two games in the big leagues. He was in the minors for 15 years as a player and managed for four. Although he was a pitcher in the majors, in the minors he was an outfielder for years, and also pitched.

Born in Richmond, VA, he got his start in the minors with the Richmond Blue Birds. He came to the majors at ages 21 and 22, but his longest stint was with the Lynchburg Shoemakers during 1906-1909 and 1911.

"Out of Jack Carney's Manchester stable the Reds got a colt while in Boston. Manager Joe Kelley purchased the release of William H. Hooker and signed him not only for this year, but next. . . Hooker's debut was not marked by success, but he pitched admirable ball after he recovered from early nervousness. He possessed excellent control . . .The Virginian's case broke dividedly hopeful.. 'No one,' said Billy Bergen, who caught him, 'could have done any better after he had recovered from his early attack of stage fright.' " - Sporting Life, Sept. 13, 1902
