Brooklyn Bushwicks
The Brooklyn Bushwicks, a high-caliber semi-pro team, played in Dexter Park, just across the county line in Queens, NY, from 1914 to 1951. They started as the Ridgewood club, owned by Ambrose Hussey, but Max Rosner bought them in 1914 with the financial help of Nat Strong and renamed them the Bushwicks.
They played at Wallace's Grounds until September 1917, when it burned down. The Bushwicks moved to Dexter Park in 1918, and played there until the end.
The Bushwicks, an ethnically mixed team, frequently faced Negro League teams in doubleheaders. Famous major leaguers also appeared against them in exhibitions. A number of former or future major leaguers studded their roster over the years, including: Dazzy Vance, Waite Hoyt, Lefty Gomez,Charlie Perkins, Al Cuccinello, Tony Cuccinello, and Marius Russo.
