Biographical Information[edit]
Brian Goodwin was a supplemental first-round pick in the 2011 amateur draft.
High School[edit]
Brian Goodwin was named the Gatorade North Carolina Player of the Year as a high school senior. He was MVP of the AFLAC All-America game that year, getting two hits, a run and the game-tying and game-winning RBIs in the 9th inning of a 4-2 East victory. He was also All-Conference in football (defensive back and kick returner) and played basketball. The Chicago White Sox took him in the 17th round of the 2009 amateur draft but he opted for college.
College[edit]
As a freshman at UNC, Goodwin hit .291/.409/.511 with 45 walks, 8 triples, 47 runs, 63 RBI, 7 steals in 9 tries and 8 outfield assists in 60 games. He tied the school record for triples in a year, led the school in RBI and was named a Freshman All-American by Louisville Slugger. Unfortunately, he had to leave school due to academic problems.
Transferring to Miami Dade College, Goodwin hit .382 with a .500 OBP as a sophomore; he was 16-for-18 in steal attempts. The Washington Nationals took him with the 34th pick of the 2011 amateur draft, compensation for the loss of Adam Dunn. It was Washington's third selection, following fellow collegians Anthony Rendon and Alex Meyer. His $3 million signing bonus was higher than 92 of the top 100 picks that year; only the top 7 picks and Josh Bell signed for more.
Minors[edit]
Goodwin debuted as a pro with the Hagerstown Suns in 2012. On April 5 against the West Virginia Power, he had a superb pro debut out of the leadoff slot, going 2 for 4 with a walk, homer, 2 runs and 4 RBI. After just five games, though, he was sidelined with a leg injury.
