Biographical Information[edit]
Brian Gibbons was a National League umpire from 1994 to 1999. He was never a full-time member of the league's umpiring staff, only coming up for a number of games each season to fill in for regular umpires who were on leave. His busiest year was 1998, when he worked 44 games, and he worked a total of 132 in his 6 seasons. On August 2nd of that year, he was involved in a incident when Kevin Young of the Pittsburgh Pirates was upset after a third strike call, confronted him and had to be restrained by teammates, but not before he brushed Gibson's mouth with his hand. Young claimed the contact was purely accidental
Gibbons earned a degree in business administration from the University of Notre Dame and worked in sales for the Coca-Cola Company for a couple of years before beginning a professional umpiring career in 1987. After being let go at the end of the 1999 season, he returned to sales, working for Adams Respiratory Therapeutics. In 2007, he became a regional business manager for Reckitt Benckiser, a health supplies company.
The date of birth listed for Gibbons at Retrosheet may be incorrect as it is the same as that of the unrelated John Gibbons.
