Biographical Information[edit]

Brayan Castillo, who is not to be confused with contemporary Dominican minor league pitcher Bryan Castillo, was signed on July 2, 2017 by the Colorado Rockies. His pro career commenced in 2018 in the Dominican Summer League. He appeared in 13 games, 10 of them starts, with an ERA of 4.87. In 44 1/3 innings, he walked 21 and allowed 47 hits, with only 1 home run. He uncorked a whopping 11 wild pitches, and hit three batters. He struck out 38.

He returned to the DSL in 2019. His ERA was 3.61 in 52 1/3 innings (11 games, all starts), and while his walk rate was only slightly less than the year before, his other numbers all improved. His WHIP went from 1.534 to 1.318.

The minor leagues were not in operation in 2020. In 2021, he found himself still at the rookie league level, but this time in the Arizona Complex League. He appeared in 8 games (5 starts) for the ACL Rockies. In 24 2/3 innings, he walked 16, unloaded 5 wild pitches, and committed 3 balks. His ERA for the year was 5.11 and his WHIP was an unsightly 1.743. On the bright side, his strikeout rate went up, fanning 28 batters, and he didn't allow a single home run.

The Rockies moved him up the chain for 2022, sending him to the class A Fresno Grizzlies. He struggled once again. In 99 1/3 innings over 22 games (all starts), his ERA once again rose, this time to 5.62. On the bright side, his WHIP went down (1.550) and he decreased his walk rate. Unfortunately, he allowed 12 home runs - a rate of 1.1/9 IP -, he tossed 10 wild pitches, and committed 3 more balks.

Despite the subpar season with the Grizzlies, he moved up to the Spokane Indians of the class A+ Northwest League for 2023. His first start on April 15th was nothing short of disastrous. In a 12-1 drubbing at the hands of the Eugene Emeralds, Castillo only lasted 3 2/3 innings, allowed 4 runs (3 earned) on 5 hits and 4 walks; He threw a wild pitch and balked three times, including twice during the same at bat. The second balk forced home the first run of the game. His next start on April 22nd was a vast improvement, though. In 5 innings in Gesa Stadium against the Tri-City Dust Devils, he allowed a single run, walked 1, and struck out 3.
