Biographical Information

Brandy Davis was briefly a major league ballplayer, but he achieved more fame after that. First, he was often the subject of jokes told by Joe Garagiola on the Johnny Carson TV show and elsewhere, and second, he spent over 50 years in professional baseball, mostly as a scout. He was prominently featured in the early 1980s book Dollar Sign on the Muscle, about scouting, written by Kevin Kerrane.

Brandy went to Duke University where he played baseball as well as participating in track and field. Dick Groat, who went to Duke a bit later than Davis, was also signed by the Pittsburgh Pirates and broke in with the Pirates the same year as Davis did (1952).

He played only two seasons in the majors, in 1952 and 1953, both with the Pirates. The Pirates lost over 100 games both years. Garagiola was on the 1952 team and was on the 1953 team part of the season.

Brandy, an outfielder, hit only .179 in 95 at-bats in 1952, but was given another shot in 1953, perhaps because he had stolen some bases and drawn some walks in 1952.

He played for the Williamsport Grays in 1956, then for the Columbus Foxes in 1958. His minor league playing career lasted ten seasons, during which he batted .292.

He managed the Greensboro Patriots in 1968, as part of a six-season minor league managing career.

He was also a Philadelphia Phillies coach in 1972.

Davis was inducted into the Delaware Sports Hall of Fame in 1989 and the Delaware Baseball Hall of Fame in 1999.
