Biographical Information[edit]

Brandon Smith has been on the South African national team, as were his father Darryn Smith and brother Tyler Smith. [1]

Brandon was 1 for 10 with 3 walks, 2 runs and a RBI in the 2014 U-15 Baseball World Cup, allowing nine runs in 2 1/3 IP and fielding .923 as a 2B/SS/P. [2] In the 2017 U-18 Baseball World Cup, he went 2 for 15 with two walks and a run, fielding .889 (playing 2B, SS, 3B and P) and was 0-2 with a 4.63 ERA. He lost to the Netherlands' Jiorgeny Casimiri in a game in which he gave up 13 unearned runs in 2/3 IP (7 H, 3 BB). He did far better against Taiwan, with a three-run complete game but lost as his team failed to score. Only teammate Mohamed Alaou and Oscar Tucci took more losses in the event. He had one of seven complete games in the Cup. Only Cristian Mendoza walked more than his 11. [3]

The right-hander pitched a shutout inning against Australia in the 2018 U-23 Baseball World Cup, when he was a teammate of his brother. He handled 29 chances error-free, mostly at first base. He hit .333/.400/.333 with five RBI in eight games, tying Rowan Ebersohn for the team lead in RBI. [4] He was 0-1 with a 13.50 ERA as a college freshman, going 2 for 5 at the plate. In 2020, he was 0-1 with a 6.23 ERA. He, his brother and his father were all on South Africa's announced roster for the 2020 World Baseball Classic Qualifiers when that was one of the first baseball events canceled by the COVID-19 pandemic. [5]

Smith was 3-5 with a save and a 8.44 ERA for Grand View in 2021 and hit .299/.455/.442. In '22, he was 1-0 with a 5.18 ERA and batted .296/.392/.341. He was on South Africa's team for the 2022 World Baseball Classic Qualifiers but did not get into a game. [6]
